Instructions for working on the Slipp site
The purpose of these guidelines is to point out Slippurinn's policy and practices in environmental and safety matters (ÖHU). This policy is also reflected in the requirements that Slippurinn makes for those who come to Slippurinn's premises. Parties are also advised to familiarize themselves with the contents of Slippurinn's safety manual. When referring to employees in the guidelines, this refers to all employees who work on Slippurinn's premises, Slippurinn's employees, contractors, subcontractors, buyers and others who have a way of getting there.
Environmental and safety management at Slippinn
Slippurinn is a company that is based on decades of experience in the field of ship maintenance and newbuilding as well as steel construction of all kinds. Slippurinn has adopted a safety and environmental management system. Through safety management, Slippurinn ensures a healthy and safe working environment for its employees and other related parties such as Slippurinn's subcontractors and service providers. Through environmental management, the company minimizes environmental impact in both operations and projects. This is in line with Slippurinn's policy of being a leader in its field and making a positive impact.
Safety equipment and personal protective equipment
The safety equipment and personal protective equipment that is mandatory for the relevant work shall be used according to laws, regulations, rules of the Icelandic Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Slippisn's safety requirements. Parties that have employees on Slippisn's premises shall ensure that all employees on their behalf use and are trained in the use of safety equipment and personal protective equipment and shall be responsible for ensuring that the equipment is legal, complete and within the time limits for durability. Personal protective equipment shall be CE-marked and in accordance with applicable regulations.
The following rules apply to employees on the Slipp premises and define, so that there is no doubt, what kind of safety clothing they should wear and what personal protective equipment they should carry.
- Employees must wear a safety helmet both indoors and outdoors unless otherwise specified in the relevant area.
- Employees who work exclusively outdoors wear a high-visibility vest or other high-visibility clothing in addition to a helmet and safety footwear.
- Safety shoes with a steel toe and a steel plate in the sole are required.
- In offices, cafeterias and cafeterias, it is permitted to deviate from Slippi's policy on personal protective equipment and safety clothing for employees.
Other personal protective equipment is used as appropriate at each time and in accordance with the hazards of the work being performed. The following personal protective equipment is for different hazards: Gloves of different types for general use in the industry of the workers concerned, safety glasses when there is a risk of objects being thrown into the eyes, for example from chainsaws, air blowers and grinding wheels in particular. In addition, face shields, fall protection belts with a lifeline, hearing protection, respirators with both dust and chemical filters, protective overalls must be used. Reflective clothing is used where work is being done in situations where it is important that the person concerned is clearly visible.
To achieve good results in workplace facilities, hygiene, safety and environmental issues, all employees need to be aware and actively participate.
In addition, employees need to be particularly familiar with:
- Slipp's Safety Manual and be aware of signs in Slipp's work area that indicate hazards and necessary safety equipment.
- If an employee notices a defect or lack of equipment that could lead to reduced safety or poorer facilities or hygiene, which he cannot remedy himself, he must immediately report it to the safety guard, safety representative, Slippisn's safety manager or his immediate superior.
- Oiling of ships in the Slippsinn area is strictly prohibited except in consultation with the project manager or foreman of Slippsinn Akureyri ehf.
Entry into enclosed spaces is strictly prohibited without written permission.
Working in a confined space
Written permission is required for entry and work in confined spaces to confirm that the necessary preventive measures have been taken prior to entry in accordance with procedure 9.5. The permission acts as a checklist and ensures that the work team is aware of the risks and is prepared to deal with them.
Traffic around the area
- General traffic rules apply in the work area. Always drive carefully, maximum speed 25km/h.
- All unauthorized private vehicle traffic around the work area is prohibited.
- In general, cars should be parked in parking lots. An exception to this is if employees need to transport tools or materials to the relevant workshop.
- All equipment and machinery in the work area must have received an annual inspection by the Icelandic Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
- All operators of machinery in the area must have the required rights from the Icelandic Occupational Safety and Health Administration to operate the relevant equipment.
Response and reporting of accidents and near misses
- The Emergency Line should be called on 1 1 2 in the event of an emergency or accident to people. The event should be reported to the Slipp Safety Manager and, if applicable, to the Icelandic Occupational Safety and Health Administration. A near-accident should be reported to the Slipp Safety Manager, who will process the report in the Slipp registration system.
Violation of these rules, unsafe work practices, and failure to use appropriate safety equipment is a disciplinary matter that will result in the following actions:
- Verbal encouragement for improvements to the person concerned as well as the employee's representative/supervisor
- Written encouragement for improvements to the employee's representative/supervisor
- Final warning sent in writing to employee's representative/supervisor
- Gross negligence in safety and environmental matters or repeated violations may result in expulsion from Slippi's work area without further notice.
Warranty
The company's prevention efforts aim to achieve a zero-accident goal while minimizing the impact of operations on the internal and external environment. Managers at all levels are responsible for implementing and supporting the company's safety, health and environmental (SHE) policy at all times. Managers must promote general safety awareness among employees through education and affirmation. Managers should work closely with their employees in implementing and resolving SHE issues.
Environmental issues
Slippurinn Akureyri places great emphasis on ensuring that all employees are aware of the environmental impact of their work and strive to reduce negative environmental impacts as much as possible. Employees must therefore always keep environmental considerations in mind.
Waste
The company's waste is sorted for recycling as much as possible and returned to an approved recipient. The following are the categories of waste suitable for recycling:
Organic waste from the kitchen, newspapers, magazines and office paper, flat and corrugated cardboard, plastic film, hard plastic and wood. Ferns, metals and metal foil are also sorted for recycling. Further information about sorting can be obtained from the employees of Slippis.
Hazardous materials
Hazardous materials are materials that are purchased as toxic and hazardous materials. Examples of hazardous materials include batteries, accumulators, paint, antifouling, fertilizer, waste oil and chemical residues that are not usable and need to be disposed of or recycled.
All hazardous materials must be kept separate from general waste and returned to an approved collection point. If an employee is in doubt about whether a material is considered hazardous or not, information should be sought from Efnamóttökunn hf. or the Health Inspectorate.
Electricity consumption
One of Slipp's environmental goals is to reduce electricity use. Emphasis is placed on managing resources wisely, and employees are encouraged to minimize unnecessary waste of this resource.
Response to an environmental accident/incident
Without exception, the causes of pollution/damage must be stopped and pollution must be prevented from entering the environment or spreading further.
The Emergency Line should be called on 1 1 2 if pollution or environmental damage is of such a magnitude that it cannot be repaired immediately on site.
The incident should always be reported to the Slipp's Security Manager.
