Health & Safety Policy
Guidelines for Work on Slippurinn’s Operational Area
These guidelines serve to outline Slippurinn's policy and practices regarding environmental and safety matters (SHE). This policy is also reflected in the requirements Slippurinn imposes on those who enter its operational area. All individuals should familiarize themselves with the contents of Slippurinn's safety handbook. When these guidelines refer to employees, they include all individuals working on Slippurinn's premises: employees, contractors, subcontractors, clients, and other visitors.
Environmental and Safety Management at Slippurinn
Slippurinn is a company with decades of experience in ship maintenance, new construction, and various types of steelwork. Slippurinn has implemented a safety and environmental management system to ensure a safe and healthy work environment for its employees and all associated parties, including subcontractors and service providers. This environmental management system minimizes the environmental impact of both operations and projects, aligning with Slippurinn’s commitment to being a leader in its field and contributing positively.
Safety Equipment and Personal Protective Gear
Mandatory safety equipment and personal protective gear must be used for relevant tasks as required by law, regulations, the State Labour Inspectorate’s rules, and Slippurinn's safety requirements. Parties with employees on Slippurinn's premises must ensure that their personnel use and are trained in the correct use of safety equipment and personal protective gear and are responsible for ensuring the equipment is legal, intact, and within expiration dates. Protective gear must be CE-marked and comply with current regulations.
The following rules apply to employees on Slippurinn’s premises, specifying required safety wear and personal protective equipment to avoid any ambiguity:
- Employees must wear a safety helmet both indoors and outdoors unless otherwise specified for a given area.
- Employees working exclusively outdoors must wear a visibility vest or other high-visibility clothing in addition to a helmet and safety footwear.
- Safety shoes with a steel toe and steel plate in the sole are required.
- In offices, cafeterias, and break rooms, Slippurinn’s policy on personal protective equipment and safety clothing is relaxed for employees.
Additional protective gear should be used as appropriate, depending on the risks of specific tasks. These include various gloves for general trade use, safety goggles to prevent eye injury from machinery like saws, drills, and grinders, as well as face shields, fall protection belts with lifelines, hearing protectors, dust and chemical respirators, and protective coveralls. High-visibility clothing is used in situations where visibility is essential.
To achieve high standards in workplace facilities, safety, and environmental practices, all employees must be aware and actively participate.
Additionally, employees are encouraged to:
- Familiarize themselves with Slippurinn's safety handbook and be aware of signage indicating hazards and necessary safety equipment on Slippurinn’s premises.
- Report any defects or deficiencies affecting safety or working conditions that they cannot resolve directly to a safety officer, safety representative, Slippurinn's safety manager, or their immediate supervisor.

Unapproved private vehicle traffic on the worksite is prohibited, and vehicles should be parked in designated areas unless transporting tools or materials to a specific worksite. Responsibilities
The company’s preventative measures aim to achieve the goal of zero accidents and minimize operational impact on internal and external environments. Managers at all levels are responsible for implementing and supporting the company's safety, health, and environmental (SHE) policy. Managers are required to enhance general safety awareness among employees through training and consistency and should work closely with employees in implementing SHE solutions.
Environmental Matters
Slippurinn Akureyri emphasizes that all employees should be aware of the environmental impact of their work and strive to minimize negative environmental effects whenever possible. Employees should always keep environmental considerations in mind.
Waste Management
Company waste is sorted for recycling where possible and delivered to certified recipients. Waste categories for recycling include organic kitchen waste, newspapers, magazines, office paper, flat cardboard, corrugated cardboard, plastic film, hard plastic, and wood. Beverage cartons, metals, and metal films are also sorted for recycling. For more information on sorting, employees can consult Slippurinn staff.
Hazardous Waste
Hazardous waste includes toxic and hazardous materials purchased, such as batteries, accumulators, paint, preservatives, fertilizers, waste oil, and unusable chemical remnants that need disposal or recycling. All hazardous waste must be kept separate from general waste and delivered to a certified recipient. If unsure whether a material qualifies as hazardous waste, employees should consult Efnamóttakan hf. or a health inspection authority.
Electricity Usage
One of Slippurinn’s environmental objectives is to reduce electricity consumption. Emphasis is placed on conserving this resource, and employees are encouraged to avoid unnecessary waste.
Response to Environmental Incidents
In the event of pollution or environmental damage, immediately halt the source of pollution or damage and prevent it from spreading. Call Emergency Services at 112 if pollution or environmental damage cannot be remedied immediately on-site, and always report the incident to Slippurinn’s safety manager.
