Contract Signed with MV Osprey Ltd.
Slippurinn DNG and the Canadian fishing company MV Osprey Ltd. have signed a contract for the design, construction, and installation of a groundfish processing line onboard the shrimp freezer trawler Northern Osprey III. The installation will start in September in Akureyri, Iceland.
“This is a very exciting project for Slippurinn DNG. The collaboration with the owners and crew has been productive during the design phase, and we look forward to welcoming the vessel north this autumn,” says Magnús Blöndal, division manager at Slippurinn DNG.
Focus on Capacity, Quality, and Efficient Design
The main focus in designing the groundfish line was high throughput, excellent catch handling, and precise grading and packing.
“The biggest challenge was to design a high-capacity groundfish line within the available space. The owners were forward-thinking when designing the ship and left some space for the potential cod- and halibut processing,” says Ásþór Sigurgeirsson, designer at Slippurinn DNG.
Northern Osprey III has been used exclusively for shrimp fishing, but with cod quotas increasing off the coast of Newfoundland, the new groundfish line is a valuable addition.
“Examples of equipment we will supply and install are: Sealion FIFO bleeding and washing system, which maximises blood removal and cleaning; a DNG grader for sorting raw material prior to freezing; and packing scales to simplify operations and reduce labour and minimise overweight. The Jap line will also be modified to increase efficiency. Both cod and shrimp will be packed into final packaging before freezing, reducing handling and aligning with modern processing practices,” Ásþór adds.
Strengthening Year-Round Operations
With the new groundfish line, Northern Osprey III will be able to operate year-round, with plans to target groundfish for 3–4 months annually.
“Working with Slippurinn DNG on this new groundfish line has been a very positive experience — they’ve been responsive, practical, and consistently willing to find solutions that work for the vessel. The addition of a groundfish line is a critical step forward for the MVO III and Labrador Fishermen’s Union Shrimp Company Ltd., strengthening our operations and contributing to the long-term economic stability of the region. Ensuring reliable access to cod quotas into the future will be essential to fully realize these benefits for our crew, our communities, and the broader fishery,” says Keith Coady, operations manager at MV Osprey Ltd.
